degenerate dimension and partitioning

I needed to provide drill down to some granular attributes, so I setup a degenerate dimension with several attributes like serial_number, etc. Doing so has somewhat understandably caused my processing time to increase from 2 minutes to 45 minutes for my sample set of data.

To handle this increased processing time, I'm attempting to use partitioning. Now, the trouble I'm running into is how do I process the degenerate dimension in step with the partitions. I am getting errors from the process that boil down to fact_key does not exist in the degenerate dimension so the fact can not be joined to the fact dimension table. How do I process a degenerate dimension in step with my partitions. Does that make sense?

Keehan

Try to see where most of the time of your processing goes. Try to process dimensions and partitions separately.

Is processing partitions becomes way slower? Or it is dimension processing that takes most of the time?

The same question.

If we use 12 partitions, and set 12 fact table to them, how about the fact dimention? it will get new members from diffrent fact tables by itself correctly?

Defrag needed ?

Hi,
Env : SQLserver2000 Entr. (active/passive cluster)
windows 2000 adv. server.
Server has RAID10 setup for all the drives. I have used
one partition X for the backups and i used to delete the
older backups. right now i want to use this partition for
the database files because i changed my backups to
different drive. Before placing the database files to
this drive X, Do i need to run any defrag utility? or
windows defrag? . If i wont run anything and use this X
drive for my database files , will it hurt SQL
Performance?
ThanksIf there is nothing on the partition it shouldn't matter. The OS wont care
if there was something there before as long as it's deleted for good you
should be all set.

default value

How do i setup the table so that the default date enters the current
date whenever someone enters a record.
vjYou can add a default constraint for the column with a value consisting
of only the date portion of the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP (or GETDATE()). For
example:

ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD CONSTRAINT DF_MyTable_MyDateColumn
DEFAULT
CAST(CONVERT(char(8), CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, 112) AS smalldatetime)
FOR MyDateColumn

Hope this helps.

default rs settings

is there a simple manual how to setup RS.

with the administrators group im able to view my reports. but normal users are not able to view anything. they can enter reporting services, but not open a report.

The answer to your problem is to go into Report Manager, click on the properties tab, and add a New Role Assignment.

In the Group or User name box, type Everyone, and then below that, select Browser.

Click on OK.

You can look thru the BOL to see this also. Also, check out the many ssrs blogs online.
