De-install and re-install problems SQL server 2005

I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005.

After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports.

Regards,

Jan J

When you go to Add/Remove Programs, do you still have a SQL Server entry? If so, remove it. If not, what is the error you receive when you try to install again? You mentioned a missing MSI file. Can you give the exact error message? Also, can you check your SQL install folder (%windir%\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG) for the text string "value 3"? If an error was returned during setup, it will appear about 5-10 lines above this return code in the logs.

Thanks,
Sam Lester (MSFT)

Hi Sam,

Indeed there still are SQL entries left without the options to change/remove, only the date last viewed is available. When clicking you are beeing informed that the entry no longer exists and beeing asked to remove it. When clicking YES, nothing happens, the entry remains.

When re-installing again I am beeing asked for the msi file needed for the setup with a choice to read it from a CD or to download it from the internet. I first choose to use the download option and second I choose to use a msi file from the substracted install file I downloaded from the internet. Both result in a failed Setup and error messages for the install of MSXML6, SQL VSS Writer, SQL Server Database Services, OXC11, SQL Server Backward-Compatibility Files and Reporting Services. I decided run the uninstall tool I found in the MS library at "Unistalling Previous Versions of Visual Studio 2005", but without any succes. When running MSICUU it gave "run-time error '-2147024882 (8007000e)': System Error &H80004005(-2147467259). A not further defined error." And no program could be de-installed that way. Then I decided to run msiinv but I couldn't get a *.txt file output. Unless I attempted several times to de-install programs as SQL Server 2005 (and accompanying programs, report server, msvml6, vss, etc) and Visual Studio 2005. msiinv still reports their presence.

All this information I visible stored in a mail message that I first sent to an other Microsoft department. If you are interested, please give me a mail address where I can send it so you can have a good look at all the error messages.

I can not work without a computer so I used a recently back-up file, without the SQL and Visual installation, to restore my C-drive. All I have to do now is re-install everything. But I think there should be an improvement on how the add/remove programs work for SQL and Visual Studio. To me it seems that there is beeing left maps and folders regarding these programs that were not there before the install. One is the %\Program Files|Microsoft SQL Server folder and the other is the My Documents\Visual Web Developer folder. It might be usefull to let the user decide which files/folders to be left on his computer.

I also would like to enter another comment. I noticed during this "new" install of MSVML6 SQL, Setup Support Files and SQL Server Database Services the Status reports that items are beeing removed, not for sure if all is been backed-up, from the system and later for some components during the Setup Progress back-up files were removed. I remember that during installations of windows people always had the choice to backup their old version which could be restored later after a de-install. I keep on feeling that with the SQL install this not occurs and that this might cause a problem during de-install.

I am sorry but with the restore there is no longer a LOG file for the Setup Bootstrap.

Defragment disk

Hi
Is it acceptable practice to run Disk Defragmenter on a Disk when SQLServer
is installed and running?
(using Win2000, SQLServer 2000)
ThanksSure, as long as you exclude the SQL Server database files (perhaps the tool
will not even try on open files). If it is a dedicated SQL Server and you
don't overuse autogrow, then there shouldn't really be any need for this.

I guess what I need to know is will anything bad happen if the data & log
files are defragmented? Is it best to switch off SQLServer first?|||> How does one exclude these from the defragmenter?
You have to check that with your defrag tool. If you are using the built-in
defrag tool, I suggest you check this in a Windows group.

Probably, until you got info from the defrag tool vendor that the tool does
not touch locked files. SQL Server does not itself have a problem with the
files being defragged, but you don't want the risk of having two tools
working against the same file(s) at the same time.

defragmented. There is also no requirement that SQL services first be
stopped prior to defragmenting. Microsoft's defrag APIs fully support
defragmenting SQL database devices online.

I was trying to get that kind of info from another defrag manufacturer, but
never got a response to my question. Hence my careful approach. :-)

Default Web Site using wrong IP

I just installed sql server 2005 on a windows 2003 server. I chose the option to install but do not configure. After restarting, I used the Reporting SErvices Configuration Manager and it all looks ok. When I browse to //localhost/reports I get a rs page with the message of:

The request failed with HTTP status 400: Bad Request.

One slightly unusual thing is SQL Server 2005 was installed as a named instance ("(local)\SQL2K5") - the server's default instance is a sql 2000 installation, which had RS installed and running. Before configuring RS for 2k5, I deleted the VDs for Reports and ReportServer from IIS, so that I could recreate them to use 2K5.

The new ReportServer VD appears to work (although no reports are installed to test).

Thanks for any help getting this issue resolved!

I have a bunch of these in Application Log... I have a feeling it's related.. I don't know what it means though
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Anyone?

I'm not sure the applog error that you're catching is related, so let's try to fix it and then see if the original problem goes away (I suspect it won't):

1. Click Start | Run and run dcomcnfg.exe

2. In MMC, open Component Services | My Computer

3. Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, select the COM Security tab. Click on the edit default button in Launch permissions options area

4. Add network service and give it appropriate perms (Local Launch and Local Activation permissions)

If that doesn't do the trick:

1. Start DCOMCNFG

2. Under Component Services -> My Computer -> Dcom Config -> Netman click
Properties, then Security tab

3. In Launch and Activation Permissions box click Edit.

4. Add Network Service with Local Launch and Local Activation permissions

Good luck!

|||Nope... you were right - neither worked.

I have since created 2 new VDs - Reports2K5 and ReportServer2k5, which correspond to my instance of SQL SErver 2005. The REportServer2K5 appears to be working OK... Reports2K5 (manager) still gives me the 400 error.
Would this error be logged anywhere?

Thanks for your help.|||Big Smile The site (Default web site) was using a specific IP address.. I changed it to All Unassigned and it works!

|||Good catch!|||Is there a way to configure SQL 2005 Reporting Services using an IIS Website with a specific IP?|||

I went into Component Services and Netman has local launch permissions and can find no reference for "Network Connection Manager Class" (the name the ID translates to based upon registry lookup). What in Component Services should I be looking for and where? This is a brand new installation of 2003 Server Professional w/ Exchange 2003 and all the latest service packs/patches. Thanks,

Had very similar on 4 servers, all using unassigned , but they all had host headers specified. Short summary below to explain.

Each server had three web sites all bound to unassigned ip address, using host headers and diffrent ssl ports to separate ou the traffic.

Report server had previously been working ok until the final site config when the host headers were implemented.

As one site could act as a default then the problem was resolved by adding an additional binding for port 80 with no header specified.

All boxes running fine now.

The origonal posting pointed me in the right direction and as I was also implmenting http endpoints in SQL , I could have spent awhile on red herings. Much thanks.

I believe this errors can be fixed by the following 899965

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=899965

|||

had a similar problem and found out the following:

If you want to run Reporting Services under a different port than normal, you have to change these two config files:
rsreportserver.config
and
RSWebApplication.config

Enter the full path (like http://servername:port/ReportServer) to <ReportServerUrl> (delete <ReportServerVirtualDirectory> then!) or resp. <UrlRoot>

The result is then
<Configuration>
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl>http://mbs05:8088/reportserver</ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
</UI>
.....

and

<Configuration>

<MaxQueueThreads>0</MaxQueueThreads>
<UrlRoot>http://mbs05:8088/reportserver</UrlRoot>
<UnattendedExecutionAccount>

Hope this helps,

|||Just a blank host header for a site that has an assigned IP. Work on three different boxes for me.|||Same for me. I moved Reporting Services to it's own website (because sharepoint installed it's own ISAPI filter on the default website that was totally screwing up RS), and set a host header for the new site. Every time I turned off the default website, RS would break, even though it should have nothing to do with it.
I switched the host headers around (so the default website has host headers, and the RS website doesn't) now it works perfectly.

Folks,

I'm trying to resolve the same error but having a bit of trouble following through the instructions in the KB.

If one of you could please set me right it would be much appreciated.

Firstly, the error I'm getting in the event log is as follows:

"The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool."

So I go to the regedit and look it up.
I search for BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E
And Regedit duly comes up with:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

Which identifies this as the "Network Connection Manager Class"

Allright..now the KB article then tells me to :

4. Click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg in the Open box, and then click OK.

If a Windows Security Alert message prompts you to keep blocking the Microsoft Management Console program, click to unblock the program. 5. In Component Services, double-click Component Services, double-click Computers, double-click My Computer, and then click DCOM Config. 6. In the details pane, locate the program by using the friendly name.

If the AppGUID identifier is listed instead of the friendly name, locate the program by using this identifier.

And this is where I'm stuck.. cos there is nothing there that corresponds to a Network Connection Manager Class or to the CLSID... (is that what they mean in the doc when they refere to AppGUID ?)

So, I can't continue on with the fix.. because I can't find the right app to fix the launch and activation permissions for....

I'd really appreciate a bit of help on this one...

Thanks

|||Just a blank host header for a site that has an assigned IP. Work on three different boxes for me.|||Same for me.

{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool."

So I go to the regedit and look it up.
I search for BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E
And Regedit duly comes up with:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

Thanks

Another question on this...just to be sure I'm chasing the right tail....

When I point a browser at the site http://localhost/Reportserver$DeptServer05 I get the following message...

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

Default templates in Query Analyzer

Hi all,

I've installed SQL Server 2000(SP2). The thing is in Query
Analyzer Templates tab, I can see all the templates folders
(eg: Attach and Detach Database, Create Database, etc) but
I can't seem to expand them. Looks like there's nothing in
it. I've specify my templates directory path under Options
but still there's no templates under those folders. Can
anyone help me?

Thank you in advance.
..In my Options settings, templates are specified to be in
C:\Program\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Templates\SQL Query Analyzer

The .tsql files are in subdirectories under that catalog.
Works fine with the Insert Templates menu option.|||Yep...works fine with the Insert Templates menu option. I've installed SP2, checked the templates file path in OPTIONS, and all the *.tql files are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Templates\SQL Query Analyzer folder...
Anyone know what is going on?|||Where in Q.A. is that Templates tab where you can't expand?
I couldn't find it. If guide me , I'll have a look how it works at my machine.|||Can you post a snapshot of where you are having the problem in query analyzer ?|||Attached will be a screenshot of the problem...|||Try the following:

Change the directory option for the default template directory. See what it displays - then change it back.

Create your own template - save it in a template directory like create database and save it in the parent directory as well.

The template in the parent directory should appear directory under your templates folder in qa and under the create database folder - you may have to right on the folder templates and create database and refresh.

Let me know what happens.|||Hi rnealejr and all,

Tried changing the directory option for the default template directory. When I did a refresh, all the folders under Templates are gone. Changed back the templates defaulti path, same problem...folders that I can't expand.

Created my own template, save it to the templates directory under "Create Database", did a refresh, same result...folders that I can't expand even I did a couple of refreshes.

Any suggestions?

Thank you|||Create a template file in the parent directory - you should see the template file along with all the folders - let me know. Also, did you install the following service pack SQL2KSP2.exe ? And of course, the inevitable question - did you try to reinstall ?|||Created a template file in the parent directory, but still the same. Yes, I've installed SP2. I haven't tried to reinstalling yet.

Thank you|||Well since you have verified that it is not a folder mapping issue and no known documentation exists detailing this issue - I would reinstall.

Good luck.

Default Server Name

My question is how can I get it to use the correct servername as the default

Did you change the server name after SQL Server was installed?

If yes to the above question, use the following (from BOL):
-- substitute the previous name and new name of your servers as appropriate
sp_dropserver old_name
GO
sp_addserver new_name, local
GO

Steve:
Thanks.
I inadvertantantly installed the sample databases to the wrong place, and
could not access them (ie: Northwind, PUBS, etc...) After alot of
troubleshooting, I got them installed from "\\computername" to
"\\computername\NetSDK". Then I deleted the databases from the data file in
"\\computername". The NetSDK folder is where they are and when I select
"\\computername\NetSDK" from SQL Server Service Manager's screen's dropdown
menu, all is fine. However, "\\computername" always comes up in the
dropdown as the default.
I'm kindof new with programming with SQL Server and not sure how to execute
the commands you suggested (sp_dropserver old_name ... GO
sp_addserver new_name, local ... GO)
All I know is how to code to the database.. creating databases, connection
strings within VS.NET and SQL queries, etc. from the programming environment
(I'm used to DB2, Access and some others).
Any additional insight is appreciated.
Thanks again,
Bob
|||Bob,
Sorry, I misunderstood your original question, it sounded as though you had
renamed your server after the SQL Server install. Since that is not the
